Fighting Squadron 9 (VF-9)25 June 1923 - Standard operating allowance 12 fighting airplanes, carried two on each of six battleships of the Scouting Fleet. For combat duty in conjunction with the protection of spotting airplanes and the protection of the Scouting Fleet against enemy air attacks. Temporarily based at Naval Air Station, Hampton Roads, using personnel assigned to Aircraft Squadrons, Scouting Fleet, and a nucleus of experienced personnel from VO Squadrons 1 and 2 of the Aircraft Squadrons, Battle Fleet.
